May 20, 2016- The Young Survival Coalition Presents: In Living Pink Gala, The Art of Survival
On May 20, 2016 at Three Sixty˚ (10 Desbrosses Street, NYC), Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and Spencer Kohn will present Internal/External, a photo series of breast cancer survivors commissioned for In Living Pink: The Art of Survival. Presenting a multimedia expression of the breast cancer experience, the evening will feature works by some of New York's top established and emerging contemporary fine and performing artists, including survivors, co-survivors and supporters. The event raises crucial funds for YSC’s support programs and resources for young women affected by breast cancer.
Spencer Kohn is a photographer and fine artist working out of New York and Los Angeles. Spencer’s work has shown in galleries, museums and publications worldwide. Recently, and for the third year in a row, Spencer participated in a group show at The State Hermitage Museum in Russia. He photographs for fashion brands and celebrities, with work published in ELLE, V Magazine, and Hunger Magazine.
Artist Statement:
Spencer Kohn has created a body of work that asks breast cancer survivors to confront themselves. This series captures two different portraits of each woman affected by breast cancer. The first image is the external view- the face that society sees. Strong, beautiful, but a mask. When asked to look in the mirror, we encounter the truth, whatever that may be.
No one will understand what a cancer patient goes through, unless they have experienced cancer themselves. Most people who deal with cancer see it as an experience that can be likened to rebirth. Their lives have changed so drastically and they have to figure out new ways of dealing with the world. Internally, they have to rebuild from the bottom-up. Externally, they see relationships and interactions change with every person in their lives.
